I was wondering if anyone have tried recently (2013) either TrueMove or AIS 3G service on their smartphone. I’ve read many threads on thaivisa and other forum but the information is not current and no conclusion reached. It would be great if someone could shed some light on service consistency in Bangkok & Pattaya. Thanks.

I should’ve updated this a while back, but here goes. Last time I was in LOS Oct 2013 for the first time I decided to add 3G service to my Thai number, I wasn’t willing to try that on my previous trips because of negative feedback from others. I usually just get a SIM for local calls. This time I got an AIS 3G 2GB/month for 799 including 150 Baht of free calls. You’ll find the main booth at the airport first level above Pattaya buses among other providers such as DTAC and TruMov.  I haven’t tried the other providers I’ve been using AIS for years but just for calls. Please add your experience in the page below if you are using something else so others could benefit from it.

I mainly want data coverage to move around fast on the ground and visit new places easily and not wast time in figuring my orientation I’m very bad at this even in my hometown .

With a Google account, you could create custom Google maps and put all your places of interests as pins or mark road stretch then add notes on that map to remind you of some details about those places.

I’ve stayed last trip a full month, with heavy usage I barely used 63% of my plan. Next time I’m going with the 1 GB/month plan.

Pattaya: Generally it is very well covered, with random intermittent blackouts in roads of the beaten track. And sometimes in tourist areas you may experience disconnects but it wouldn’t last more than few minutes. Sometimes I suspected my phone map mess up from too much panning and zooming it freezes a bit then gets back to normal after I close it and reopen it again. But the whole experience was very positive H+ connectivity in most areas and sometimes it reverts to 3G speeds.

Pattaya areas tested:

Naklua up to TJ Music House; Buakhaow; Soi 1 – 13/4; Jomtien Soi 5 all the way to Long Sawai restaurant at the far end of Jomtien beach stretch.

Bangkok: Similar experience as Pattaya, but I was a bit disappointed near Bridges and  Sky train paths you are very likely to have a week signal there, if not, you will not have solid GPS signal with intermittent clear view of the sky. Pattaya is more open and doesn’t have this issue.

Bangkok areas tested:

Soi Nana, Soi Cowboy, Asok, Phrom Phong, Victory Monument, Udom Suk,

All in all, I would get 3G SIM again when I go to LOS it’s useful to have.
