Not really. Not only is perfume kind of expensive at airports these days (you'll get better deals buying online - of better yet, buying fake perfume at a Thai market), but you've also got to make sure you get the right brand. And anyway, you always buy her perfume at the airport and she takes it for granted now. This simply won't count as a Christmas gift.



Clothing

Ladyboys love fashion and clothes. The latest skinny jeans, a dress with slutty slits revealing a little too much flesh, heels that are so high they come with air traffic warning lights.. Yeah, you'll get her a dress or a pair of heels, or maybe both, yeah both! You're smart, you'll work out her size - tall and skinny, with a bit of extra baggage space..

If you understand ladyboy fashion then you are either a prize winning psycho-analyst or a secret crossdresser (my guess would be both). Whatever you get is likely to be wrong and insulting, and a waste of time and money. Most of her dresser cost 300 baht from the market and now you've blown 3,000 baht on an outfit which will get moth eaten in her wardrobe.



Jewelry

You know Thai's love jewelry, especially gold. In fact, your ladyboy girlfriend has been hinting at you to buy her a gold necklace for months. OK, this is it, you're going to get her an expensive, solid gold necklace, which she'll love and wear for years to come. And every time she looks at that piece of shiny jewelry she's going to remember how much you love her..

I'm joking of course. Obviously that isn't going to happen. Yes, she'll love it, you were right about Thai's loving gold. But she's only going to wear it for the duration of your holiday. As soon as you leave (maybe before if she has balls - which of course she does), she'll take it to the pawnshop to get it valued. When she cashes it in for night of Thai whisky and young rentboys simply depends on how much money you are sending her each month.



Surgery

Now here's something she'll love, appreciate, and remember you by - and something she can't trade in for drugs, alcohol, and young male companionship. You'll buy her a pair of boobs or some hip injections..

Newbie error. The last thing you want to do is start buying her surgery. Guest Friendly Vs Ladyboy Friendly

To claim that a Thai hotel is guest friendly simply means that the staff will allow you to bring a guest back to your room. However, this doesn’t necessarily mean you won’t be charged an extra fee, and it may also come with certain rules and restrictions.

Most hotels which are guest friendly will also be ladyboy friendly, especially hotels close to Bangkok’s red light districts, but in some cases a guest friendly hotel may not be ladyboy friendly; while they will allow their stayers to bring female guests back to their room they may now allow ladyboys to enter. Some will claim to allow all guests but may have staff that are prejudice against ladyboys and even unwelcoming to them.

If you’re planning to take ladyboys back to your hotel room it’s important to make sure your hotel is ‘ladyboy friendly’ and not just guest friendly. The best way to check a hotel is ladyboy friendly is to simply ask them. We suggest you do this by email, not only will this get you their ladyboy guest policy in writing but you’ll also be able to do so anonymously if you wish.



Joiner fees

A joiner fee is a charge some hotels will enforce when stayers bring guests back to their room. This can range from as little as 100 baht up to and over 1000 baht. Some hotels won’t advertise that they have a joiner fee and some will even claim to be guest friendly and then spring this extra charge on you when you bring your first guest back.

Most hotels will let you know about any extra charges when you ask for their guest policy and it also pays to ask if they have a joiner fee or extra charges for bringing guests back just to make sure.

If you only plan on bringing one guest back during your stay at a hotel you can usually avoid paying a joiner fee by booking your room for 2 occupants (most Thai hotel rooms cost the same for 1 and 2 occupants), and when bringing a guest back and faced with a joiner fee you can tell them this is your 2nd occupant, and ask to register them to the room. This will usually work when bringing 1 single guest back, but rarely works if bringing a different guest home each night.

Multiple guests

Some guest and ladyboy friendly hotels will allow you to only bring a limited number of guests back to your room. Most guest friendly hotels will allow you to bring at least 2 guests back to your room but some will charge for each additional guest with only the first guest allowed in for free.

Multiple guest policies tend vary and it definitely pays to ask the hotel on this their policy if you’re someone who likes a lot of company. It’s understandable that most guest friendly hotels will have a limit on the number of guests you can bring to your room, simply because they have to respect their other occupants.



Location

One thing you must consider is the location of the hotel. If you’re planning on spending a lot of time in the Bangkok gogo bars or around Pattay’s Walking Street, you want to consider ladyboy friendly hotels within a distance that’s comfortable to you.

Some people enjoy hitting the bars and gogos but don’t like to be surrounded by nightlife, preferring a more serene locale. So it also pays to check the surrounding area of a hotel before opting for something recommended by other ladyboy lovers.

The great thing is that ladyboy friendly hotels are plentiful in Thailand and you shouldn’t have to settle for something that doesn’t suit your tastes and requirements. Ladyboy friendly hotels aren’t limited to areas close to bars, and if you check with hotels in quieter areas you are likely to find some ladyboy friendly options.

Hotel type

It’s important to pick the style of hotel that makes you comfortable. Some people value their discretion and look for a hotel where they can go about their business unnoticed, while others are far less worried about what other people think and have budget and comfort high on their priority list.

Some people prefer small hotels and guest houses which are often great value for money and very friendly, but typically the staff and other guests will soon know what you are doing and who you are doing it with. At the other end of the budget some people love those large and luxurious hotels with stunning facilities and snazzy rooms, and often at affordable prices. However, these types of hotel also tend to attract families, even when close to the red light zones, and you may feel a little uncomfortable walking your date through the lobby or inviting her to join you by the pool.

The Butterfly and the Flame by Dana De Young

‘"There's something you need to know about Emily..." In the year 2404, America is no more. In a land ruled by the oppressive theocracy known as the Dominion of Divinity, being gay is a capital offense, adultery is punished with the lash, women are forbidden to work, and forced marriages are common.’

If you’re into Sci-fi and ladyboys this is the novel for you. The Butterfly and the Flame is a dystopian novel of a corrupt, technologically obscene, repressive future where culture wars have erupted and destroyed much of modern day America. Most interestingly, the story’s protagonist is a male to female transsexual called Emily La Rouche, who has been secretly living as a girl since the age of six, but is about to enter a forced marriage the moment turns sixteen.



Almost Perfect by Brian Katcher

‘Logan Witherspoon recently discovered that his girlfriend of three years cheated on him. But things start to look up when a new student breezes through the halls of his small-town high school. Sage Hendricks befriends Logan at a time when he no longer trusts or believes in people. Sage has been homeschooled for a number of years and her parents have forbidden her to date anyone, but she won’t tell Logan why.’

Almost Perfect is a deep and heartfelt story about the difficulties and hardship of a young male-to-female transsexual in America. It’s also an extremely clean book which doesn’t delve into sexual fantasy or lust as many other ladyboy books do, instead exploring the psychological and social aspects of the story, notably done in a fairly easy to relate way.



Non Fiction

The Third Sex: Kathoey, Thailand's Ladyboys by Richard Totman

‘Through the lives of three kathoey, male transvestites, this introduction to transgender in Thailand places a cultural, historical, religious, biological, and psychological emphasis on international traditions of sexuality. A fascinating anthropological and sociological exploration, the context of transgender is detailed through the challenges and joys found in Manat, Lek, and Akorn as they travel through the social rites of passage to become kathoeys.’

One of the standout non-fiction books about Thailand’s huge ladyboy population, the book explores the lives of three male-to-female ladyboys. What makes the book such a fascinating read is how it follows three ladyboys with somewhat different views and careers Through a series of interviews the book paints a picture of not only the lives of the three Khatoeys, but examines the position of ladyboys in Thai culture, history, and religion.




Ladyboys: The Secret World of Thailand's Third Gender by Susan Aldous

‘An intimate portrait of Thailand's ladyboys, the men who have chosen to become women. Funny, passionate, angry and provocative, Ladyboys is a no-holds-barred look at the secretive lives of Thailand's transsexual men. Here, they offer intimate details of the lives that they've never publicly revealed. They talk about the choices they've made, their relationships, families, frustrations and hopes.’

Another great non-fiction book about Thai ladyboys, this one is perhaps more interesting in the fact that the narrator of this collection tales is a female, giving perhaps a more unique and alternative perception, compared to the many ladyboy related books authored by males. The book actually tells the stories of several Thai ladyboys, coming from quite different backgrounds and career paths, notably including a sex worker, cabaret performer, entrepreneur, and a Muay Thai boxing champion.

I was excited to visit on a recent visit to Bangkok and had high expectations. The last time I was there was on the last night of Calypso at the Asia Hotel, which left a great memory of the place. The venue remained unchanged - large enough yet not as massive as some of the high-end productions, leaving enough room for an up close and personal experience. Such a great space. Ticket at 1200 TBH raised some expectations, that’s Tiffanys prices, ok.

First thing I noticed that those cheap restaurant chairs where still there, man they hurt your ass after like 15 mins. And wow it almost seemed they doubled the amount. Made me giggle to see some customers actually struggling to get passed other seated customers, consequently being near glued together. I like my personal space, hypersensitive kid an all.

Also the same lecture-hall set up remained unchanged, which I never understood given that the space is so well suited for playful and personal lay-out. They really could have thought that through a bit better IMHO and overhauled it to do justice to the space. But oh well, stage is not too small, not too large, easily fits backdrops, 20+ performers, etc. All good stuff, but enough about the venue.

The show itself is actually quite surprising. In a positive way. None of that high-end production Thai-Indian-Russian song touristy stuff. – not that there is anything wrong with that, like that dude said: “you love that shit man.” Playhouse has a nice (and fresh) mixture of quashi-modern songs combined with some cabaret, and even some musical, classics. I did find it a bit of a mix and match, with not always the right levels of energy flowing in and out. Funny also that they position themselves as Ladyboy cabaret, didn't feel it was actually with guys taking the lead in quite a few sets.



Its was nice to see that they maintained ‘The Joker’ who kind of does his own thing throughout the sets, although he was a bit too much in the forefront for my liking, needs the surprise factor rather then be a common denominator which I felt he kind of became. You know that kid that is always there but goes unnoticed.



Anyway, you boys will want to know, any hot chicks? Sure. Not my style, but quite a few beautiful, and quite a few sexy ones.



Did I like it? Meh. It was all right. I do really ike what they try to do, they do try to serve something different from the high-end productions with some surprising performances. I also like the energy of the performers, they do really try to make a show and sure I think they are pretty, handsome and talented and all. But you see the execution is just mediocre, student-esque even, and stage sets, well, you recall when you where in kindergarten, handcraft class, I’ll stop there. And man I get shivers down my spine every time I walk into an amazing space and see it not watered properly.

Right, the main problem I have with the current approach is that they are charging me 1200 TBH in a prime location with a stellar cabaret heritage and serve me up something that is simply mediocre, albeit has the potential to be great. That just pisses me off. Put the proverbial dots on the i. It needs the right investment across all axis to do justice to the space and heritage. Having said all that, it remains one of the best spaces I have seen for a truly unique, playful and personal cabaret. I’ll tell you one thing, if I ever hit that lottery I am buying that space and serve it right. Ever watched Burlesque?

Size queens are on a mission to discover the next big 'thing.'
