Mate of mine came back from Pattaya late Feb.After about 9-10 days he started to get blinding headaches, said they were making him feel sick and nearly went to the hospital at one point.Usual painkillers didn't seem to work ,but got a migraine tablet from the chemist that seemed to help a bit. Then he started with the shits and being sick, couldn't keep down any food whatsoever for 3-4 days, took him some electrolytes around this time.He finally saw a doctor who, after finding out he'd been to Thailand, said it may be dengue fever and took blood tests. Also had a rash on his chest which is another symptom.Doctor said to let it run it's course,BUT if any bruising or bleeding(gums)to go back to Dr. immediately.
Another couple of days and he began to feel a bit better and kept food down, left him feeling very weak.Blood tests came back and it was a strain of dengue fever.Dr. says there are 4 strains and although he will now be immune to this one he can still catch the others.Dr.said it was becoming more prevelant in Thailand visitors, particularly in the built up areas.
It is caught from the daytime mosquitoes,a thing many people do not expect,so be careful. There is one strain that causes internal bleeding and can be fatal,so any worries go straight tio the doctor.
Still hasn't put him off though! as soon as he's saved up he'll be out there mongering again!!
Cheers,
Ericeric.

No,there isn't a vaccination against it.You get immunity after you've had it,but as the doctor told my pal there are a few different strains and Pentire said one of his mates has had it twice.Just be careful, give the room a good spray, take the bedsheets back and behind the curtains,in the cupboards, best you can do.Daytime mosquitoes are a lot rarer.Always seem to be a lot round Didis' bar in the afternoons,he swears that's where he got bitten-god knows why they hang around there!!

Googled it.The Aedes Aegypti mosquito(the carrier of dengue)breeds in clear water.Doesn't travel far and is more active in the daytime.Because it doesn't travel far outbreaks can be very localised. They say that you can spray a local area to try and wipe it out.Simply, the carrier is more active in the daytime, but usually in built up areas.

Patts had an outbreak of it around 18 months ago with a fair few folk being infected.....I remember reading it on Thai Visa.com.....one of my colleagues caught it but thankfully it wasn't too virulent and he had a fairly swift recovery.....

I have read it can last a year...... :loco:
