Hi all. Just wanted some advice on visiting during the monsoon season (may to october) as I have some free time then. Is it worth going during this time or does it piss it down so much that its difficult to go chasing? Is the scene quiet so the amount of LB's is less than usual?

Thanks.

Monsoon season is one of my favorite times of the year in Thailand after "winter" (November-February). The usually short daily rain shower brings down the humidity, cleans out particulates in the air, and washes down the streets. It is also low tourist season as it is summer in Europe so the European visitors are sunning themselves in the south of France or in Greece and not in Thailand. Therefore, hotel prices are down and rooms plentiful. The girls are also a bit more hungry than usual.

There is no drop in girl numbers during the monsoon season and it is a great time to come to Thailand for a holiday. (The only caveat would be that it will be wettest on the Andamen Sea side of Thailand (Phuket). The monsoon season does have an appreciable affect on at area of Thailand but there are still nice days as well and the hotels are really cheap that time of year there.)

Ok that's great, my options are more flexible now after reading that. Thanks Jonnie.

I thought less tourists would equal less girls but that was just an assumption on my part based on nothing but my own flawed logic LOL. One of my main concerns was spending more time avoiding getting soaked than chasing LB's. I guess in times of a down poor would be to just seek shelter until the rain subsides.

Thanks again, much appreciated.

Thailand's tropical rain showers don't last long, usually less than an hour, and usually occur in the late afternoon or early evening. Normally, one just ducts into the nearest bar or cafe for a drink to wait it out. Everything is back to normal within minutes of the end of the rain. Of course, there are major tropical storm systems (typhoons) that pass near thailand late I the monsoon season, which can bring torrential rains for days and cause major havoc, but these are few and far between and your chance of hitting one of these are minimal.

As jonieb said it is a good time to be in Thailand.  Lower hotel prices and far fewer tourists.  The wettest time is mid August to mid October, with September having by far the highest average rainfall of any month.  But even then most rains are short downpours in the late afternoon or evening hours so not a big deal.  The clouds then help keep the heat down.

The number of girls might be down some then but the number of punters is down more... so the ratio is more in your favor :-)

I agree it's a good time to be in Thailand. But there will be nights where there is a downpour for hours. Doesn't happen that much but it does happen. I remember being stuck at Ezy Bar for about 4 hours one night. Being stuck at some beer bar up near R-Con on Soi Buakhao and then walking down Soi Buakhao in nearly knee deep water to get back to my room. The baht buses that were running though the water were all on a private hire and would not stop. A small little fold up travel umbrella comes in handy.

My biggest problem as a non resident, and someone that lives in an arrid climate, is the humidity. I usually walk much while in Pattaya but I came one September and ended up riding at lot more than usual. Also spending more time in bars and restaurants with A/C. The humidity can be oppressive if not use to it.

I still think it is a good time to come but the heat index is quite a bit more severe compared to winter. Just be prepared for that.

April and May are the hottest months of the year. For me they're the most uncomfortable and I'm glad when they've passed. Just a few degrees makes all the difference.

Rain doesn't really bother me plus it cools and cleanses the place, but a small umbrella comes in handy.

As an add on, some bars (and other places) decide that because they have fewer customers, they raise their prices. Logic is not the rule.
Old, cantankerous, and sorry if I piss you off - well, not really. Just enjoy!

I was suprised how mild things were this last year in the wet season. After only going in the cool and hot seasons before I had this ideal that during the wet season it was unbearable, floods, staying inside all the time, girls going back home.

The weather turned out to be much nicer in May - Aug, then in March - May.  You can bargain hard in either time, but I've actually gotten the lowest prices in hot season.  Was back in Dec, Jan and the prices are basically double from any other time, and sometimes the places were packed. I'm going to try and skip the high season in the future.

The Monsoon season is also the season I prefer. Just rain morning and evening, the price is low, not to much tourist and thai people are more relax. The best way for a cheap travel.

Be careful if you don't like hot weather. But you also can go to the beach and enjoy the ocean.

Enjoy It
