Just a friendly inquiry as to why you are watermarking photos attached to messages when  they are not your property?

This is not the only board that does it, but that doesn't make it proper.

I don't know if you can turn that off with the  IPB software, but SMF doesn't watermark photos attached to a message, but will, if set to do so, watermark photos uploaded to the associated Coppermine gallery software.

I'm no lawyer here, but, once a person voluntarily uploads a photo onto the forum, wouldn't they then become the property of the forum....to do with as the site owner sees fit?

I'm guessing that if nothing else, watermarking the photos is good advertising for the forum. Once somebody inevitably rips them off and posts elsewhere, maybe those future viewers will see the watermark and find their way to this free forum.

Doesn't really bother me.

The watermarking of photos was always a response to the user requests, to protect the uploaders from having their images reused and to kind of force the forum to take more responsibility of what is posted on the forum. To my knowledge the forum has never reused or sold any images posted by users, in fact the banners we have on other sites include images that were paid for.

I think if you are using a a free service to share or store media and they are openly watermarking images, then you can have few complaints. As I say, I don't think you need to fear that the forum is trying to steal those images, it's simply trying to protect itself and it's members. And if it's a serious issue for you, you can always  exchange email addresses and send your images that way, or store them elsewhere and send links.
