I have a soft-spot for Cambodia having spent a total of around one year there over the last 3 or 4 years.

 

I know it may sound like a bit of a cliché, but Cambodia is very much like Thailand was perhaps 30 years ago. But I like it. It has its quirks, it's history and its fun-factor too. But it does have a poor infrastructure and numerous dangers.

 

We often think Thailand is something like the 'Wild West', but if you were to visit Cambodia then you would really see it. Having said that, the capital city, Phnom Penh, has come forward leaps and bounds in just those last 4 years and since I first visited the Kingdom back in 1999 it seems like (almost) a different city altogether.

 

Unlike Thailand you literally only have to turn a corner to see poor Cambodia staring you right in the face, it is everywhere. Very often it is right in front of your eyes and only in specific small (tourist) areas is it hidden to any discernible degree.

 

I remember reading the article above last year and although there is a lot of truth in it the article itself is very sensationalistic. I used to read the www.khmer440.com forum quite regularly until the dominance and dislike of outsiders by a number of their rather dislikeable core posters finally wore me out.

 

They do have some interesting articles over on khmer.com though, but like many articles anywhere about anything they tend to glorify or generalise.

 

There is a good ladyboy community in Phnom Penh and some other areas too, but you do have to seek it out. There are no dedicated ladyboy bars, but often bars contain one or a few LB's but things and listings of venues can change over-night. If you stay there for any length of time you can quickly get into the scene and where to find more ladyboys by just meeting one and asking her to take you out.

DC, thanks for the response. Yahoo or whatever site said it was one of the cheapest places to retire (which is why I read the article). I was just responding to the last item where they were talking about Thais. It's on my list to visit, but I don't think I'll stay.

There is a new friendlier forum that many have left khmer 440 and it's unfriendly and abusive regulars for. I've nor seen any LB threads so far.

Aces Up gave a link to another Cambodia Forum that is friendlier than the khmer440 forum you saw the post in. In addition there is a poker forum with a travel section where a couple of young board members discuss Camobodian lbs.

There are some lovely LBs in Phnom Penh, mostly cater to Japanese and Korean, punters. So the LBs look korean more expensive than the Thai LBs about $20 ST $30 LT

They are scattered throughout the hostess bars. Some bars will have one or more and many bars will have none. It's helpful if someone has posted a recent report naming bars but even some old reports might name bars that still have them. You can also find them in the discos on/near Street 51 (Pontoon and Heart of Darkness). It's been about 16 months since I have been in PP.

Yes I went to pontoon in PP, and it was full of hookers most of them very hot, I ended up with a ladyboy in a dingy hotel room didn't realise she wanted money the next day haha bit think I gave her $20, she was very hot and didn't look at al like a ladyboy, apart from no breasts, is it safe to go with these girls, and is it advised to use western condoms?

heart of darkness is the ladyboy capitol of PP, you can also find them on the streets in the surrounding area

 

sihanoukville has some hot ones on the beach too
